Parkside

The Full Story

This is the story of how Parkside Homes came into existence.  In 1933 faced with a shortage of housing, the federal government started a controversial program which was explicitly designed to increase-and segregate-America's housing stock. The housing program under the New Deal were reflective of a state-sponsored system of segregation. The Program was primarily designed to provide housing to white, middle-class, lower-middle-class families.  African Americans and other people of color were left out of the new Suburban Communities-and pushed instead into urban housing projects. This is the story of the first Public housing community in Detroit, Michigan. They were named Parkside homes!   Listen to the whole story Below.
